How can Quill & Reed help authors in Edinburgh?
Edinburgh writers are surrounded by literature, which is a gift and occasionally a weight. We help you focus on your own book: what it is, who it is for, and the most sensible way to bring it to those readers.
Support can cover early book development, manuscript guidance, editing, cover design, illustration, formatting, Amazon KDP and IngramSpark set-up, author websites, launch support and growth after publication. You choose what you need; nothing is bundled in by default.
Working remotely
Can I work with Quill & Reed remotely?
Yes, and that is how every project runs. Manuscripts and files are exchanged securely, conversations happen by video or phone, and proofs and approvals are handled digitally. You never need to travel, and your location does not change what is available to you.

Writing in Edinburgh
In 2004 Edinburgh became the world’s first UNESCO City of Literature. The Edinburgh International Book Festival takes place each August and is one of the largest celebrations of books and writing anywhere.
The National Library of Scotland on George IV Bridge is a legal deposit library with extensive collections for research, and the Scottish Poetry Library in the Canongate is a free, public library dedicated to poetry. Scottish Book Trust, a national reading and writing charity based in the city, runs programmes that support writers across Scotland.
Publishing Scotland is the trade body for publishing in Scotland and publishes useful information about the industry here, including Scottish publishers.
- Scotland is part of the same book market, with its own context
- Platforms such as Amazon KDP and IngramSpark, ISBNs and the book trade work the same way across the UK. Scotland has its own legal system, so if you are signing a contract governed by Scots law, or need legal advice on content, use a solicitor qualified in Scotland.
- Festivals are for readers and conversations
- Book festival programmes are chosen by their organisers. It is worth attending, learning how authors talk about their books and meeting readers, but no service can honestly promise you a festival slot.
- Scottish settings and language
- Books that use Scots, Gaelic or strong dialect need a proofreader who respects those choices rather than “correcting” them. Tell us, and we will brief the specialist accordingly.

What happens if I want to publish?
If your manuscript is ready, or nearly ready, the Publish packages cover cover design, formatting, ISBN guidance, set-up on Amazon KDP and IngramSpark in your name, and launch support. Editing and custom illustration are quoted separately, before anything is agreed.
Every package is a 12-month agreement with the monthly price and the total commitment shown up front. Prices are the same in Edinburgh as anywhere else in the UK.
Already published?
Can you help if my book is already published?
Yes. Quill & Reed also works with authors whose books are already live but need more visibility, stronger positioning, an author website, email-list infrastructure, marketing content, relaunch support or ongoing growth. You do not need to republish with us.

Do you work with authors elsewhere in Scotland?
Yes. Fife, the Lothians, the Borders, the Highlands and Islands, anywhere at all: the work is remote.
Is publishing different for Scottish authors?
The publishing platforms, ISBNs and the book trade work the same way across the UK. Legal questions, such as contracts governed by Scots law, are different and need a Scottish solicitor. Quill & Reed does not give legal advice.
Are you affiliated with the Edinburgh International Book Festival?
No. We mention it as part of the city’s literary life. Quill & Reed has no affiliation with the festival and cannot arrange appearances.
Can I work with Quill & Reed remotely?

Do I keep my copyright and royalties?
Yes. You keep your copyright and your royalties, and the publishing accounts are set up in your name. Quill & Reed charges for services and takes no standard royalty percentage.
Can you publish a book I have already written?
Yes, if the manuscript is ready or close to it. The Publish packages cover cover design, formatting, set-up on Amazon KDP and IngramSpark in your name, and launch support. If the manuscript needs editing first, that is quoted separately before anything is agreed.
Can you help if my book is already published?
Yes. The Author Website and Author Growth plans are for authors whose books are already live, wherever and however they published. You do not need to republish with Quill & Reed.
