How much does Quill & Reed cost?+
Publish is £99 a month (£1,188 over 12 months), Publish + Grow is £199 a month (£2,388), and Managed Author is £299 a month (£3,588). Editing, specialist illustration and advertising spend are quoted separately where required.
Why is there a 12-month term?+
Publishing a book properly usually takes months, and the work continues after launch. The 12-month term reflects that, and spreads the cost. The total is shown before you commit.
Do I keep my copyright?+
Yes. Your copyright stays with you.
Do I keep my royalties?+
Yes, under the standard service model. Royalties are paid by the platforms into your own accounts. Quill & Reed is paid through the service fee.
Do I own my KDP account?+
Yes. It is set up in your name and remains under your control.
Do I own my IngramSpark account?+
Yes. It is set up in your name and remains under your control.
Do I own my author website?+
You own your domain, website content and assets, mailing list and reader data. The third-party software the site runs on is licensed by its providers, not owned by either of us.
Is editing included?+
No. Editing is recommended only where genuinely needed and quoted separately after we have seen the manuscript.
Is proofreading included?+
No. Proofreading is quoted separately where required.
Is illustration included?+
No. Illustration needs vary enormously, so it is quoted separately.
Is advertising spend included?+
No. Managed Author includes basic Amazon Ads management, but the ad budget itself is separate and paid by you.
Will my book be stocked in Waterstones?+
We cannot promise that, and nobody honestly can. Bookshops, including Waterstones, decide what they stock.
Will my book be available on Amazon?+
Yes, through your own Amazon KDP account.
Can my book be available to bookshops?+
It can be made available to order through trade distribution such as IngramSpark. Available to order is not the same as stocked on shelves.
Do you guarantee sales?+
No. We can make sure the book is professionally prepared, properly published and well launched. Sales depend on many things outside anyone’s control.
Can I use my own editor?+
Potentially, yes. We will look at how their work fits the production workflow.
Can I use my own cover?+
Potentially, yes. The final files still need to meet print and ebook technical requirements, and we will check that.
Can I provide my own ISBN?+
Yes, if you already own ISBNs. We will not knowingly charge for work you do not need.
Can I upgrade packages later?+
This is something to discuss with us; the options will be set out clearly before any change is made.
What happens after 12 months?+
Before the end of your first agreement, we will explain the available ongoing options clearly. You keep your copyright, publishing accounts, website ownership and reader data either way.
Can I publish under a pen name?+
Yes. Retail platforms allow books to be published under a pen name.
Can you help if I already self-published?+
Yes. We can help with a more professional new edition or with your next book.
Can you help with a second edition?+
Yes. A second edition usually needs updated files, metadata and sometimes a new ISBN.
Can you help with a series?+
Yes. Series consistency across covers, metadata and future-book planning is part of the work.
